CALD Communities

Australian Bush Comfort and Confidence

Our flagship program for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities is Australian Bush Comfort and Confidence (ABCC).’ ABCC was created specifically with people new to Australia in mind. We have met too many people, particularly from CALD communities, who want to enjoy having a bush BBQ, camping or using local greenspaces for bushwalking and recreation, but aren’t doing so due to real or perceived barriers. Many Australians have enjoyed the banter when travelling overseas that "everything out in the bush will either bite you, sting you, eat you or drop on you" and this has created many myths about our great outdoors! Other barriers we have heard include not knowing how to cook on a fire, select a safe camping location, set up a tent, fear of bushfires or getting lost or not knowing how to apply bush first aid.

ABCC is a fun, interactive and hands-on workshop where we give people the skills, knowledge and confidence to be able step out into the Australian bush. We blend a mix of practical exercises such as campsite selection, campfire skills, tent erection, snake bite first aid and bush navigation with other sessions on bushfire awareness, weather, snake and spider awareness and equipment needs.

The sessions have been extremely popular and book out quickly. Check out the "Book an event" button on the top right for details of our next session!

ABCC serves as an excellent educational workshop for migrants. Although I have lived in Australia for two decades, this was my first systematic camping and bush educational workshop. I learned many new  things.” – Stephanie Li, ABCC workshop participant, 1 June 2024.
